Numbers 1–10

Today's goal: say and write the numbers 1 to 10 in French, and use them in the pattern J'ai ___ [objects].

Tricky sounds — watch these

  • cinq — the q is silent. Say "sank" but with a French nasal.
  • six — the x makes an "s" sound at the end: "sees".
  • sept — the p is silent. Say "set".
  • huit — starts with a "w" sound: "weet".
  • neuf — the f is pronounced: "nuff".
  • dix — the x makes an "s" sound: "dees".

The key pattern: J'ai ___ [objects].
Example: J'ai trois crayons. = I have three pencils.

Warm-Up

Do this on paper before anything else.

Write on paper

  1. Write the numbers 1 to 10 in a column. Next to each, write the French word.
  2. Now cover the numbers and write the French words from memory — 1 to 10 in order.
  3. Write J'ai trois crayons. — 3 times.
  4. Write J'ai sept livres. — 3 times.
  5. Write any number sentence of your choice using J'ai ___.

Tip: say the French number out loud as you write it — rhythm helps memory.

Say it aloud

Count out loud twice — once slowly, once at normal speed. Then count backwards from 10 to 1.

Count and use the numbers

Do each task out loud.

  1. Count from 1 to 10 in French — twice.
  2. Count backwards from 10 to 1 — twice.
  3. Count in twos: deux, quatre, six, huit, dix.
  4. Pick up objects around you. Say J'ai ___ [object] for each count.
  5. Tell your neighbour: J'ai ___ ans. (I am ___ years old.)
